About Gienah Dove

“Art is intrinsic to the human experience. From as early as I can remember, creating art has been essential to my existence, a way to make sense of the world and bring intangible ideas into physical form.

Gienah Sonnema is an independent artist based in her home town in Northern Pennsylvania. She graduated from Elizabethtown College with a BA in Fine Arts and a minor in Arts Administration.

She draws inspiration from her surrounding natural environment, often paired with macabre fantasy elements. Her works extend from three-dimensional animal figures, to figurative paintings, to functional ceramics, each offering unique ways to explore the human condition.

“Growing up, I felt a deep sense of loneliness. I struggled to make connections with others and often fell into habits of purposeful self isolation. Art became a way to be seen by others, and making art for others became a way to reach out and connect.

My practice seeks to reach into the feeling of seclusion and create something that resonates with and connects others. My figures exist alone, desperately reaching out to the viewer for a sense of connection and comfort.”
